When my son entered Charles Dickens Elementary school, he was assessed as having a developmental disability.
Seeing the barriers that prevent many students from getting the support they need, I began to advocate for changes to make our public schools safer, more welcoming, and more inclusive for all students.
I joined COPE because of its strong history of standing up for our kids. During my three years (2002-2005) as part of the COPE/Green majority on the Vancouver School Board, we worked tirelessly to keep the impact of Liberal cuts out of the classroom.
Together, with the community, we stopped provincial funding cuts to inner city schools, and increased funding to schools around the province. We passed comprehensive policies limiting corporate involvement in Vancouver schools, and developed the VSB’s ground-breaking LGBTQ policy and action plan.
There is much more to tell – but even more still needs to be done.
