Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all fly first class to the Mediterranean coast for free? Vancouver City Councillor Raymond Louie did, and left citizens to pick up the tab.

According to a Metro Vancouver 2013 Board and Committee Expenses report, Louie flew to Rabat, Morocco in October of last year for the fourth United Cities and Local Government World Congress. The cost of his four-day trip? A total of $4,703.88.

The Coalition of Progressive Electors (COPE) spokesperson Tim Louis strongly opposed the unnecessary expense.

“A COPE City Council would immediately implement a taxpayer protection plan that would shield taxpayers from such city councillor extravagance,” said Louis.

He likened the gross misuse of public funds to former cabinet minister Bev Oda, who stepped down in July of 2012 following a scandal revealing her taste for lavish $1,000-a-day limousine rides and a $16 glass of orange juice.

“Raymond Louie is Vision Vancouver’s Bev Oda,” he said.
