The Coalition of Progressive Electors supports the Attawapiskat First Nation, Chief Theresa Spence, and the Idle No More movement.
Chief Spence has now been on a hunger strike for over two weeks to protest the conditions imposed on the Attawapiskat First Nation by the Canadian government. She is calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Governor General David Johnston to meet with her immediately to discuss the effects of the Omnibus Budget Bill on with the Attawapiskat First Nation and on indigenous people across the country.
Chief Spence’s courage has sparked a country-wide protest against measures included in the Conservative government’s Omnibus Budget Bill, which attack the quality of life not only of First Nations, but of all Canadians. Changes to environmental regulation included in the bill are particularly worrying.
COPE supports the demands of Chief Spence, and adds its voice to the growing call for justice for indigenous people.
