There will be no advance poll in Strathcona or the Downtown Eastside in this year’s civic election. NPA city councillors voted down a motion by COPE Cllr David Cadman to hold an advance poll in neighbourhoods where voters have traditionally faced the greatest challenges in marking their ballots.
Cadman moved the motion because the nearest advance polls to Strathcona are at City Hall or Trout Lake Community Centre; at least two bus rides away.
"The NPA are disenfranchising voters who have the hardest time getting registered," said Cadman. "Putting an advance poll in the Downtown Eastside and Strathcona would have also helped disabled and elderly voters in the area."
Advance polls provide more time to vote and so allow for greater voter participation. The NPA have effectively reduced voter participation in the DTES by nixing the motion.
Advance polls are scheduled for November 5, 8, 10 and 12, from 8 am to 8 pm at City Hall, Dunbar, the West End, Trout Lake and Sunset. The Sunset location was added since the last election in 2005.
