The Coalition of Progressive Electors acknowledges that the region called Vancouver is located on the unceded Indigenous territories belonging to the Musqueam, Skxwú7mesh-ulh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and Tsleil-Watututh peoples.
COPE recognizes that the colony of British Columbia was created through organized dispossession and colonial violence. As with all levels of government, the municipal government has played a central role in perpetuating settler colonialism and the oppression of indigenous people. Today the legal, political and cultural structures created by that history persist into the present, shaping our institutions as much as our neighborhoods.
With full recognition of this history, COPE seeks to work together with Indigenous people to end the ongoing violence, dispossession and displacement. This includes cultural, linguistic and social forms of colonization. COPE recognizes Indigenous land and self-determination struggles within and beyond this city and will work to support these struggles in the best way possible.
