COPE calls for support for public education

“A heavy handed attempt to directly silence the Vancouver Board of Education’s education advocacy and to frighten other Boards into silence,” declared COPE Trustees Wong, Bouey and Blakey about the government’s appointment of a special advisor to examine the Vancouver Board of Education’s financial performance.

Motion on Beaver Lake coming to Park Board tonight

At Vancouver Park Board's Planning & Environment committee meeting tonight (April 8), COPE Park Board Commissioner Loretta Woodcock will be asking staff to report back on the ecological condition of Beaver Lake in Stanley Park as a result of a report presented by the Stanley Park Ecology Society.

COPE Trustees say Province deliberately underfunding public education

COPE school trustees, Allen Blakey, Allan Wong and Jane Bouey, announced tonight that, as it stands, they would not and could not vote for the preliminary school board budget presented by the Board of Education's senior management.  "The provincial government's deliberate under funding and cutbacks are responsible for this budget that does not meet the needs of the children and youth of Vancouver," said Board vice-chair Jane Bouey. “Districts right across the province, even those with growing enrollment, are facing similar cuts”, she added.



 

COPE brings forward motion on a plan for the West End

COPE Councilor Ellen Woodsworth is bringing a motion to council this week, asking that staff report back on a process and a timeline for a West End community visioning process. The West End, while the densest neighbourhood in the city, has not had a community visioning process to determine community amenity needs and priorities in over 20 years.

Councillor Cadman asks for summer closure of Robson Square

COPE Councillor David Cadman will be bringing a motion to council this week asking staff to prepare a report on the possibility of closure of Robson Street,
as during the Olympics, on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer months.
