Shout Out Against Displacement and Gentrification in East Van – Panel Q&A

*Learning from grassroots struggles for affordability*
*Neighbourhoods working together toward an inclusive city*

COPE invites you to a community event about housing affordabaility in Vancouver. This event is open to the general public. Admission is free. Food and childcare will be provided at no cost.

Across our city rents are going up and people are being priced-out and evicted. It’s time to sound the alarm and “Shout Out” against housing unaffordability in East Van.

At the same time, diverse neighbourhoods are organizing to preserve and create affordable housing and to stop corporate gentrification and displacement. Come to this event to hear community organizers from different neighbourhoods share stories of organizing successes and failures and discuss strategies for city-wide movement building. Also come to give testimonies and to “Shout Out” your grievances and solutions. This event is about individuals, organizations and neighbourhoods learning from each other and working together in a united front to assert a ‘right to the city’

This event will be held in the Downtown Eastside – ‘ground zero’ of gentrification and displacement in Vancouver – and will prioritize learning from residents engaged in these grassroots struggles.

Panelists:

Kelvin Bee – Aboriginal Front Door
Ivan Drury – Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood Council (DNC)
Didi Dufresne – First United Community Legal Advocate
Kim Hearty – Vancouver Renters’ Union
Sandeep Johal – Residents Association of Mount Pleasant (RAMP)
Debbie Krull – Traditional mother, Strong Woman Productions
Andy Lai – Mount Pleasant Lions Manor Tenants Union
Hugh Lampkin – President, VANDU

Event co-endorsed by: Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood Council, VANDU, & COPE.

General Meeting

The 2012 COPE Executive recently attended a two day retreat in order to set strategic goals and objectives for the coming year. In this portion of the meeting the Executive will report to the members the outcome of that exercise.

Come and hear about new ways you can get involved with COPE!

There will also be time for members to hear reports from the Council, Education and Parks caucuses and see what issues COPE has been working on recently.
